A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

Playing to its strengths & aware of its limitations, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves doesn’t bring anything new to the adventure-fantasy landscape but it nonetheless offers a fun, amusing & sufficiently entertaining ride that exudes honesty if not much else and also benefits from its bright tone, charismatic cast & adventurous spirit.

Directed by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley, the film does a serviceable enough job to acquaint the newcomers with its world & set pieces while keeping its characters at the forefront throughout the story. It’s the fine chemistry & camaraderie between them that keeps the drama light & moving but all of it is still missing that sense of wonder.

The emotional drama at its centre is where the film is at its strongest, for its moments of action don’t stimulate the senses and it is further marred by mediocre CGI. Humour doesn’t always hit the sweet spot, plus it also takes a while to warm up to the supporting characters. Chris Pine is delightful as the lead and the rest do well in their given roles too.

Overall, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is crafted with sincerity and has its heart at the right place even if the execution isn’t always spot-on. The world building isn’t truly up to the mark and fails to garner our investment in it but this family-friendly fare remains enjoyable for the most part if not all the way and delivers a feel-good, lighthearted caper.
