Review:

The movie, The Lost Daughter, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, begins with Leda as a 48 year old “divorced” woman who goes on holiday. She rents a cottage near a beach and spends most of her time on the beach. There she watches Nina (and her husband) and her daughter, which triggers memories of herself as a young mother with two young daughters. The younger Leda is overwhelmed with motherhood. The movie toggles between scenes of the older and the younger Leda who does this and that but without any rhyme or reason, and there is no resolution of questions the viewer may have. Leda is pre-occupied and demonstrates an anomie that is inexplicable. Perhaps this is why all of the male characters in this movie are underdeveloped: younger Leda’s husband, Nina’s husband, and Vassili, who has an affair with the younger Leda. The movie is nihilistic; the title, “The Lost Daughter,” refers to…a…um…well, who knows? There is no plot or development in this movie. Any critic who gave it a positive rating must be on the take by the movie’s producers. Do not waste your money in seeing it as it is thoroughly disappointing!
